Artist Darren McGinn of Geelong was announced the winner of the Toyota Community Spirit Artist Travel Award by Lynne Kosky MP, Victorian Minister for the Arts, at the launch of the Garden Path, the annual sculpture exhibition at the 2007 Toyota Community Spirit Gallery.
Darren was selected from more than 35 entries and will travel to the Tasmanian north coastal regions near Launceston and the Bellarine Peninsula. He intends to explore the similarities between these two areas as they share ecological, industrial and social connections. Darren has a fascination with exploring someone else’s ‘home territory’ and gaining a perspective and getting a ‘feel for the place’. He aims to expand upon his documentation of local legends, myths and stories of local folklore and anecdotes of coastal regions, culminating in a solo exhibition in 2008 at the Geelong Art Gallery.
